Back in 1834 Bronte Village was first founded. The area was named as a tribute to the British Navel hero Admiral Nelson. Original settlers were mostly Loyalists who left America after the revolution. Many of Bronte's Streets were named after these founding families such as Hixon, Belyea and Nelson. Many of these families continue to live in the area to this day. Bronte's first harbour was built in 1856 and became an important hub for the shipping of timber and grain. Commercial fishing gained popularity in the late 1800's.
The Bronte Village officially became part of the Town Of Oakville in 1954.
